Sabyasachi’s home is a tropical masterpiece

Sabyasachi Mukherjee stands as a luminary in the world of fashion and design, renowned for his unparalleled ability to merge traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. Born and raised in Kolkata, Mukherjee’s journey from a passionate young designer to a global icon has been marked by his distinctive vision and innovative approach. His designs are celebrated for their intricate detailing, rich fabrics, and a deep-rooted respect for heritage, which together create a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern elegance.

Mukherjee’s eponymous brand, Sabyasachi, has become synonymous with luxury and sophistication, capturing the essence of Indian culture while appealing to a global audience. Known for his elaborate bridal couture, vibrant color palettes, and the seamless integration of historical motifs with cutting-edge fashion, he has transformed the landscape of Indian fashion. There has been none to few celebrities who has not worn a Sabyasachi outfit so far. Just like his fashion designs, his house is too is uniquely unique.

Amid the dense greenery of Kolkata’s tropical garden, Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s dream house emerges like a hidden gem, its striking Calcutta red facade partially obscured by lush foliage. Stepping inside, one is immediately greeted by a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, reflecting Mukherjee’s vision of integrating nature with luxurious living.

The living room, designed to open directly onto the garden, exemplifies this fusion. The walls, layered with vintage jade green, begin with a base of rose-pink, followed by turquoise and moss green. This intricate process creates a textured, fresco-like appearance that imbues the space with timeless elegance.

The dining area further showcases Mukherjee’s mastery of layering and eclectic design. Plantation dining chairs are upholstered in sophisticated toile de Jouy fabric, while a Syrian cabinet from The Great Eastern Home in Mumbai, featuring delicate mother-of-pearl inlay, stands as a focal point. Inside, it displays a curated collection of crystalware and a mix of Devonshire and Dutch crockery. The room’s ambiance is elevated by an F&C Osler chandelier that bathes the space in a warm, ambient light.

Adding to the room’s charm, the walls are adorned with hand-painted tropical plants created by forty-three artists from the Sabyasachi Art Foundation. Drawing inspiration from French artist Henri Rousseau, these vibrant murals bring a touch of exotic allure to the space. In the adjoining tea lounge, a card table from The Raj Company provides a cozy spot for relaxation, surrounded by curios sourced from Phillips Antiques in Mumbai, King’s Road, and the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen in Paris.

The home’s décor features a carefully curated mix of antiques, bric-a-brac, and textiles. Modern touches, such as candle stands and decorative pots from Pottery Barn, add a contemporary flair to the traditional elements. Two ornate mirrors from Taherally’s frame a window, reflecting light and creating a sense of expansiveness.

In this tropical sanctuary, Sabyasachi Mukherjee has crafted more than just a house; he has created a retreat where history and modernity coexist in perfect harmony. Every detail, from the layered walls to the curated antiques, tells a story, making the home a uniquely enchanting haven.
