Cultures only starts from home

Mouni Roy believes home is a feeling, one that you experience when you are surrounded by your loved ones. Over time, she also realized the importance of a material sense of belonging, a place you can retreat to and unwind. While in conversation with Mouni Roy, we learn many extravagant ideas about her new sanctuary.

“Now home is my husband — I started out from a small town called cooch behar. Went onto study in Delhi. From past sixteen years I am in Mumbai, & recalling my first childhood residence: it was immensely spacious even then. My brother and I used to run all over the “uthaan”, we call the lawn uthaan in Bengali. In that “uthaan” my mum potted a beautiful tulsi plant, and exactly as we see in Ekta Kapoor’s serials — even we revered it. My parents instilled spirituality inside me. That kind of culture can only start from your home and this was it.”

In the midst of a glamorous life with exhausting work days, home becomes a welcome respite, a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle. And so, away from the dazzling colours and lights of movie sets, Mouni Roy’s home offers comfort and tranquillity. Featuring immaculate colours and gold metal accents, her home is both cosy and comfortable. Brahamastra fame continued, “Every little thing is hand-picked in my living room. The colors are very neutral in my home — that’s how I am as a person too. They serve as a constant background for changing color trends! I knew overusing bold colors will make my living room distracting for the eye. My husband and I don’t like anything to be on our faces! Simply adding new throw pillows to my couch can actually change the look of my living room and match my new style whenever I want. Gaudy is what I hate — most neutral palettes also reflect into a relaxing, nature-based space.”

Among her home’s most beautiful features is the outdoor seating area. There are multiple seating choices in the area, along with large plants for privacy and grass to keep the couple’s lawn looking lush. Mouni’s kitchen has white cabinets and an accent wall covered in glossy black subway tiles. She also has a golden metal kitchen island flanked by two golden metal chairs. Chrome finishes are found on all her appliances, including the stove, fridge, washing machine, and dishwasher. “I also love the airiness that we have in our home. Cross ventilation is very important for us to breathe! We started to have our own space when I just started dating Suraj a few years ago. We started house hunting and found this place! He’s working from home, he’s mostly on his laptop and I’ll be reading my scripts. We don’t do anything mushy, it’s sheet satisfaction.”

In order to unwind after work and play basketball like he did when he was younger, Mouni’s husband Suraj, built a basketball court. The pair settled on a hue of blue, with elements of gold to be the classic elegance they brought into their space. Mouni’s home has been inspired by a minimalistic contemporary design, which is a wonderful reflection of how elegance and style can exist in a single place. Moreover, “It’s de-stressing. We must pursue an activity! My husband just can’t distract himself by binge-watching, need something else to do too and that’s basketball for him.” The couple loves the hint of gold on the shelves, on the night lamps and mirrors.
