Real estate is one of the most attractive investment options, not just in India, but globally. People from all walks of life, from the general public to celebrities, show interest in investing in the real estate sector. Even Bollywood stars are following this trend. Several celebrities have made headlines for purchasing apartments in luxury projects in Mumbai, especially in areas like Bandra, Khar, Andheri, Lokhandwala, and Worli, which have become preferred locations for film stars.
The main reasons for their investments in real estate include rental income, personal use, and emotional attachment. Real estate experts mention that many Bollywood stars are investing in projects either at the time of launch or in ready-to-move properties. A prominent example is the Oberoi Eternia project in Mulund, Mumbai, where Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan purchased 10 apartments worth Rs 24.95 crore, bringing the project into the spotlight.
The trend of property purchases is not limited to residential real estate but extends to commercial buildings in Mumbai as well. In Andheri, Mumbai, several Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Sara Ali Khan, Kartik Aaryan, and Ajay Devgn own commercial spaces in the Signature building.
According to data collected by real estate consultancy Square Yards, Bollywood stars prefer both residential and commercial real estate. Celebrities like to diversify their portfolios across different asset classes and focus on key micro-markets for reliable rental income. This has led to a surge in interest in commercial real estate as well.
Between 2020 and 2024, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan led the real estate investments with Rs 194 crore, followed by Janhvi Kapoor with Rs 169 crore. The family of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone invested Rs 156 crore in real estate, while Ajay Devgn and Kajol invested Rs 110 crore. Shahid Kapoor made investments worth Rs 59 crore during the same period.
While residential and commercial investments are typically made for immediate use or rental income, Bollywood stars also engage in emotional investments. Earlier this year, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan purchased two floors worth Rs 37 crore in the same building in South Delhi where his parents, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, once lived. Akshay Kumar, too, revealed plans to purchase the house where he lived during his childhood, paying a rent of Rs 500 per month at the time.
