Chennai corporation to map buildings through GIS

  • Telangana earlier decided to embark on a similar exercise
  • Telangana Govt shelves GIS project?

Chennai Municipal Corporation has decided to set up a GIS database of buildings in the city to check violations. The civic body is of the view that the data base is useful in improving revenue collection and other relevant aspects. In all, GIS mapping of 190 wards has been completed using drones and capturing satellite imagery and through undertaking field trips. A GIS division is going to be set up especially with 82 officials at a cost of Rs 8.3 crore.

The division will have GIS experts, engineers, IT experts and so on. They will report to Revenue and Finance Department deputy commissioner. Using the GIS data base information, the information pertaining to buildings in the city will be compared. If there are any discrepancies noticed, suitable action would be initiated. The civic body is contemplating to collect property tax 100 per cent using the GIS data base.

Earlier, Telangana state also embarked on a similar exercise. The municipal administration department of government of Telangana did some home work on the assessment of property tax and identification of illegal construction, but conveniently ignored the project afterwards. God only know whether the municipal administration department authorities deliberately set aside the project or conveniently forgot to implement it. Several are of the view that the municipal administration department should complete the project at least now.
