Saudi building tower surpasses Burj Khalifa

  • The tallest structure on the globe, Jeddah Tower, is coming up in Saudi Arabia.

Ask anyone : Which is the tallest tower in the world? Pat will come back with a reply stating that the Burj Khalifa is in Dubai. But soon, the Burj Khalifa is not going to be the tallest one in the world, as Saudi Arabia is building the Jeddah Tower. Works related to the construction of the tower have begun. The tower will also be known as the Kingdom of Towers. The structure is being built in the Jeddah Economic City. Jeddah is located on the banks of the Red Sea, between the holy cities of Mecca and Madina. Reputed architect Adrian Smith designed it.

He was the man who designed the Burj Khalifa too. Once the construction of the Jeddah Tower is completed, it will relegate the Burj Khalifa to the background, and the new tower will emerge as the tallest structure. Construction work on the 3,281-foot-tall tower has been resumed by Jeddah Economic City. The Jeddah Tower will tower over the Burj Khalifa by 568 feet. It will feature 170 storeys and have 59 elevators. A luxury hotel, office space, service apartments, luxury condominiums, and the tallest observatory will be located in the Jeddah Tower.

The total plinth area of the tower would be 5.30 lakh square metres, which translates to 5.7 million sft. To complete the first phase of the project, it would cost at least $20 billion. Only green technology and green materials will be used in its construction. One can see the vast expanse of the Red Sea on the three sides of the tower. The terrace of the structure would have a 30-metre diameter. The terrace, located on the 157th floor, is open to the public. Moreover, it features the tallest observatory.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Habitat recognised Burj Khalifa as the world’s tallest building on March 10, 2010. After 14 years of awarding the recognition, construction of a taller tower reached a phase. Jeddah Tower construction started on April 1, 2013. The target is to complete the construction by 2018. Labour problems and the COVID pandemic situation stranded the workers. The construction resumed in September 2023. The date of completion has not yet been notified.
