Let’s Beautify the Musi River this way!

Musi River Beautification: Proposal for Development with a ‘VAID’ Vision

What Should Be Built Where? Report on the Benefits of Various Proposed Developments

The Musi River is both a plus and a minus for the city of Hyderabad. While it adds beauty to the city, it also suffers from pollution and unpleasant odours. Despite numerous government efforts, the beautification of the Musi River has yet to be realised.

In this context, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced his commitment to transforming the Musi River into a scenic and tourist-friendly spot, aiming to elevate Hyderabad’s global standing. In line with this vision, he visited the Thames Riverbanks in London recently to draw inspiration and has begun planning the initiative.

To support this effort, Vasantha Architects and Interior Designers (VAID) from Hyderabad have prepared several proposals on how to effectively beautify the Musi River. They have also created a presentation covering the river’s history, its past and present conditions, and what needs to be done to transform it.

Let’s explore in detail what they have planned in this article!

The Musi River originates from the Ananthagiri Hills and flows into the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs. In reality, the river comprises two parts: the Esi River (8 kilometers) and the Musa River (13 kilometers), which together are referred to as the Musi.

In Hyderabad, the Musi starts at Himayat Sagar near the ORR Exit 17 and ends at the Majarguda Ring Road Bridge. For over a hundred years, it served as a crucial drinking water source for the city. However, rapid urbanisation has led to increased pollution. Industrial waste and untreated sewage have turned the Musi into a pollution hotspot.

In response, several sewage treatment plants have been set up to revitalise the river, and riverfront development projects have been undertaken. Despite these efforts, the Musi remains highly polluted. Industrial waste and untreated sewage continue to contaminate the river, rendering its water virtually useless. This pollution is adversely affecting aquatic life and biodiversity, as well as impacting the health of people living along the riverbanks. Rapid urbanization and encroachments along the riverbank are contributing to environmental degradation.

Given these challenges, the government has stepped up its efforts to beautify and restore the Musi River…

In seven categories..

For the beautification and development of the Musi River, the VAID organisation has proposed several ideas across seven categories. In the commercial category, the proposals include floating restaurants, a night bazaar, an open-air theatre, a concert stage, an AI generator park, and a snack land. In the economic category, the proposals include a waterfront promenade and a theme park.

In the recreational category, the proposals include City Canvas Walls, water monuments, walkover bridges, viewpoints, boardwalks, and floating platforms.

In the cultural and educational category, the proposals include a riverside library, a palace-themed museum, and a floating art gallery. In the environmental category, a wetland recreation area has been proposed. For facilities, it is suggested to construct bridges, and in the residential category, riverside housing projects have been recommended.

Commercial Category:

As part of this category, riverside or floating restaurants will be established. These will be designed to provide tourists with a unique dining experience. Such developments will promote commercial growth along the riverbank, leading to economic benefits. It has been proposed to set up these restaurants at Nagole and MG Bus Station. Additionally, a snack land will be set up at Nagole and Amberpet. This snack land will feature a variety of food items from all over Hyderabad, making them available in one convenient location.

At Nagole, a permanent concert stage will be constructed. This open-air theatre, designed to provide a pleasant atmosphere next to the Musi River, will not only create employment opportunities but also attract investments. Hyderabadis love night bazaars, and so it has been proposed to set up a night bazaar along the Musi River at MG Bus Station. This will provide a good income for local vendors.

An AI Generator Park will be developed at Amberpet. This innovative hub is expected to attract tourists and serve as a platform for learning about AI. Additionally, it has been proposed to build an open-air theatre at Nagole for those who want to enjoy movies while breathing in fresh air.

Economical category..

In this category, it has been proposed to set up a waterfront promenade at Chevella and MG Bus Station. This will be a public walking path along the river, suitable for jogging, cycling, and bike riding, as well as for relaxing and enjoying the surroundings. An underwater aquarium has been proposed at Amberpet. This will be constructed underground to provide tourists with a delightful and unforgettable experience. Additionally, a theme park featuring thrilling rides, cultural performances, and adventure sports will be established at Amberpet.

Recreational category..

It has been proposed to set up water monuments at Chevella, featuring a large statue from which water will flow in a fountain-like manner. This will attract tourists. Floating platforms will be established at Nagole, Malakpet, Kachiguda, and Amberpet. These will serve as waterfront meditation gardens and yoga platforms. Additionally, broadwalks are suggested for Malakpet, Kachiguda, and Amberpet. These walkways along the riverbank will provide a pleasant experience for tourists. Viewpoints are proposed to be constructed at MG Bus Station, Malakpet, Kachiguda, and Amberpet. Furthermore, it is suggested to build walkover bridges at MG Bus Station, Nagole, and Malakpet. For promotion and publicity, City Canvas Walls are proposed to be set up at Chevella.

Cultural and Educational Category:

A library will be set up along the riverbank at Chevella, providing readers with a pleasant experience. Additionally, it is proposed to establish a floating art gallery and a palace-themed museum at Malakpet.

Environmental Category:

A wetland ecosystem should be established at Malakpet, Kachiguda, Amberpet, Langar Houz, and Attapur. This should serve as a sanctuary for plants, fish, and birds.

Infrastructure Facilities Category:

The old bridges at Puranapool, Nayapool, and Chaderghat need to be renovated. This will not only increase tourism revenue but also raise property values in these areas. To manage traffic, it is proposed to construct new bridges at Old Basti and Narsingi. Following the development of the Musi River, the real estate sector is expected to advance significantly, with residential real estate experiencing substantial growth.
