The crazy cinematographer K V Guhan once thought of building his home in a bustling city of high rises, parks, shopping malls, and all the infrastructure of a wealthy person will have. Coming from a very small town — he made all his dreams come true with sheer hard-work.
“Grew up in Chennai, it was so crowded back then. We were living in a home where there were four families in a joint room. Worst of it all, a common toilet to be shared. Despite this awkwardness, i still cherish those days. Family’s bond never made me feel i was missing out on something. Yes, i too had desires but wasn’t cribbing about it. I remember going to a textile shop with my parents and they’ll buy a lengthy cloth for all four of us (children) — twinning back then (he laughs). It was a rule for the tailor to stitch our shorts an inch higher to sustain for a longer time! Then father used to take us to the barber and ask him to cut our hair extremely short — that was our summer haircut lasting long till four months.”
According to the director, there is nothing wrong with wanting your home to look nice — perhaps even expensive. He ellaborates, “Because i have always been living in tiny homes, i bought a property which is more than 3600 sft. The interior was nicely done! Since, whatever i missed earlier i encapsulated all those wishes now. As soon as you’ll enter into my home, it will connect you to my cultural roots — from where I belong. Totally south-indian gaga! We have built pillars and placed some traditional art-works. It’s okay if i don’t get to stay at a five-star hotel suite, but i want to go back to my home.”
If it’s statement lighting, flamboyant flower display, popping doors or art — it’s okay for him to have those in a flat too. He continued, “My brother is a director too and the moment our lifestyles upgraded, we shifted to an independent home. That house made us realise a sentiment that we were losing the affiliation. We as a family felt divided! Everyone were busy in their own rooms, a phone call would bring them down for a dinner together which was saddening reality to see. I am ready to give up on luxury but not on family. Also, my first home made me realise the importance of hygiene! I made it a point to have a sanitised restroom now.”
A very homely person, he likes, “Shooting and then returning back to home, strict rule! I like cooking when I return from shoots. And if i had all the money in this world, I’ll still build another dream home in Coimbatore only and not outside my country. In my free-time, i go there for some tranquility and rejuvenation. You’ll see me travelling in local buses there, that’s the life.” Bommarillu Bhasakar is that one friend who’s house he admires the most! He said, “He has a classy taste. He told me how he waited for years for some unique pieces to arrive from abroad. His dining table isn’t available from a local store! Even, i can’t afford it still, it’s that bloody expensive.”
