Six members of a gang who cheated more than 500 people in the name of allotting houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana were nabbed by the Kanpur police recently. The police froze Rs 6.5 lakh in their bank accounts.
They were identified as Ram Bahadur, a resident of Sachendi, master-mind of the gang, Shiv Singh, Lala, Nanke, Babu Singh, all residents of Sajeti and Sonu also resident of Sachendi.
According to DCP Crime Salman Taj Patil said that the accused used to call people posing as officers related to PM Awas Yojana. “The people were told that they have been allotted houses. Then the people were asked to deposit some amount. In this, some rupees were to be deposited in the form of form charge and some in the form of installment,” said DCP and added, “After a few days, calls were made again on the pretext of depositing installments or submitting documents. The thugs then used to procure the ATM account number and mobile phone number, besides other necessary details from the people. As soon as the information was received, the thugs used to withdraw money from the bank accounts of people.” The breakthrough into the case was made when one Razia Begum, a resident of Railbazar, lodged a complaint with the Railbazar police station. “After being booked under relevant sections of IPC, all six accused have been sent to jail,” said DCP further.
