Rs 82 crores sanctioned for construction of four STPs

Measures to prevent
pollution of twin reservoirs

The State government initiated measures to prevent pollution of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, which have been the main source of drinking water for the city of Hyderabad. The GO 111 was implemented for the conservation of these reservoirs by imposing structural restrictions for 10 km from the FTL range of these twin reservoirs.

But recently the government has lifted the ban stating that the twin reservoirs which catered to 27.59 per cent of drinking water needs at the time of issuing GO 111, currently serve the needs to less than 1.25 per cent and hence, they are no longer the main source of drinking water for Hyderabad. Accordingly, measures have been taken to prevent these reservoirs from being affected by pollution. For this, Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) will be set up in different areas and diversion channels will be constructed to prevent the treated water from entering these two reservoirs. In this context, Rs 82.23 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of four STPs and other works. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has been entrusted with the responsibility of their construction.
