Govt must focus to protect twin reservoirs

Environmentalists are concerned over cancellation of GO 111 which could cause huge irrevocable damage to flora and fauna in the region, which would result in loss of billions of rupees. The Hyderabad Zindabad Forum and the Telangana Social Media Forum jointly organised an event to discuss the consequences of the repeal of GO 111 recently.

On the occasion, former HUDA chairman and former MLA Kodanda Reddy said that fresh precautions should be taken to protect the environment from time to time. He suggested that rather than discussing on GO 111 and its implications, it would be better to focus on protection of twin reservoirs – Osman Sagar and Himayath Sagar. He reminded that experts were warning of possible floods if proper steps were not taken in this regard. The GO 111, was issued during the tenure of Kodanda Reddy as the HUDA chairman.

Reservoirs, lakes, water domain, BIS India technical member BV Subbarao said the areas covered under GO 111 were home to rare medicinal plants and animals. “The current situation is like a thousand realtors versus a billion people,” he said. The event was attended by leaders from various political organisations.
