- Corruption is said to be behind this GO upliftment
- This decision is without scientific reasons
- Renowned environmentalist Dr Lubna Sarwat
Just a little rain and the Hyderabad roads and nalas will give a reality touch to its people. Gandipet gates are being lifted to divert the floods coming from above. Will this situation repeat in the future? In such situations, it is very important to think about the problems that will arise due to the removal of GO 111. If shopping malls, villas, IT companies, and apartments are set up in the catchment area, where will all the dirty water from them go? Until now, due to the lack of a special drainage system, people have been leaving their waste in the mud. If it repeats, then there is no doubt that Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs will become two other Hussain Sagars. In this context, environmentalists are of the opinion that it is not appropriate to remove GO 111. Eminent environmentalist Dr Lubna Sarwat shares her views on this matter exclusively with the Real Estate Guru. Excerpts from the interview:
The reason for releasing the report of the People’s Scientific Committee prepared by three scientists on the issue of GO 111 is that the government is taking away a life. Does the government actually have the right to eliminate it? As far as we know, the government does not. Even if we think that the decision to remove was taken on the basis of this report, there is no report that supports the government’s move. Hence, we asked three scientists in the city to give a report on this, and they agreed. A report was prepared and released, no matter how many problems were encountered. We will submit this report to the government, the High Court, the Supreme Court, the National Green Tribunal, and all the people.
We are now seeing how the climate is changing. In this context, how environmentally careful should we be? Just two weeks ago, it was decided that destroying the environment is an international crime. Here, GO 111 prevents hotels, malls, and commercial buildings in the catchment area of the twin reservoirs. Also, it is very clear in the bio that agriculture and horticulture are allowed there. In such a case, how can they allow what is prohibited there? The government should note one thing here. Originally, when this reservoir was built in 1908, it was built based on a flood prevention mechanism. However, the government is considering them as sources of fresh water but not as a flood prevention mechanism.
