Poll campaign paralyzes construction activity

Leaders hire services of construction workers for campaign

Construction activity takes back seat in Hyderabad

The ongoing election campaign has impacted the construction sector as the political leaders hired the services of construction workers in the campaigning. As part of the campaign, the political outfits hold meetings and rallies. The mobilization of people is necessary for these events. In this backdrop, the contestants from various parties are utilizing the services of the construction workers to suit their purposes. Their services are being hired paying them daily wages, leading to construction activity getting stranded at many places.

As an alternative, many builders have been sustaining the construction activity roping in the services of the migratory laborers from Bihar, UP and Jharkhand. The builders state that the construction activity has diminished for the past 10 days in the city. The laborers say that they get only Rs 800 if they work from 9 am to 6 pm at construction sites carrying the construction materials. Sometimes, the contractors pay a reduced sum of Rs 600 or Rs 700 per day. In contrast, the political parties pay each laborer Rs 500 for taking part in two hours of the poll campaign. They claim to take part in two or three rallies per day earning handsome rewards. They find the campaign work far better compared to construction activity and firm on not reporting for construction work till the campaign gets over. According to a conservative estimate, at least 4 lakh construction workers are employed in real estate projects. The elections have come as a boon for improving their revenues.
