The Karnataka Government has initiated measures to prevent recurrence of the recent flood situation in the garden city, which reeled under severe impact of the floods. It could be construed that the floods in Bangaluru occurred due to construction of buildings encroaching upon the flood flow canals. When the floods issue rocked the State Legislative Assembly, the state government decided to take stern action against those who obstructed the flood flow canals. It is pertinent to note that only the private builders but also government agencies should be blamed for the sorry state of affairs.
The Bangaluru Development Authority converted 23 lake beds into layouts and sold 3500 sites. The Bangaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) encroached at least five tanks. In this backdrop, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai ordered probe into such incidents constituting a committee comprising of a judicial official and two experts. He assured the house that the government would save the Garden City from flood threat in the next three or four years. The people of Telangana are heard passing remarks that similar probe should be ordered against the builders for launching projects on encroached tanks. Several have been appealing to the government not to spare those who develop real estate layouts on encroached tank beds.
