Large-scale infra development

With over one crore population, Hyderabad went on to become the global city. Not only people from all parts of the country live in the city, but also those from all parts of world. Once the city was characterised by bad roads and traffic snarls. However, the city is developing beyond all expectations. The Greater Hyderabad city is undergoing complete transformation with the launch of various projects by the Government of Telangana. Shining roads, major fly-over, under passes, wide traffic junctions are the hall mark of the development of the city. The infrastructural development has increased the transport facilities and also connectivity to the far-flung areas of the city. So, people are keen to buy properties in the outskirts even if the location is a faraway place.

The State Government has realised the fact that solving the bourgeoning traffic problem and development of roads is essential so that it would be able to strike MoUs with MNCs. That is why the government prepared plans to develop the roads completely and implemented an action plan accordingly. Also, it focussed on providing better infrastructural amenities to the residents of the city. During the past seven years, the state government spent Rs 67,35,000 crore, including Rs 32,532 crore by the GHMC, for development of infrastructure during the past seven years. The GHMC spent 80 per cent of the funds to develop fly-overs, under passes, roads, 2 BHK houses for the homeless poor. Under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), the GHMC identified the busy roads and roads where the commercial activity is very high. As part of SRDP, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Hi-Tech City, Kukatpally, Bachupall, Pathancheru, Abids, Charminar, LB Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Shamshabad, airport area, Uppal, Secunderabad, ECIL, Alwal, Kompalli, Jeedimetla areas have been developed.

Availability of funds, minimal land acquisition has been given importance in development of various corridors. The GHMC implemented the SRDP in five phases. It spent Rs 32,532 crore to improve the infrastructure and living standards of the people. As part of it, it targeted to build 46 fly-overs, seven under passes, four RoBs, 5 RuBs and develop 46 traffic junctions. Under the Comprehensive Roads Maintenance Project (CRMP), the GHMC allocated Rs 1839 crore to develop 709 storm water drains. The State Government has plans to build elevated corridors from JBS to Tumkunta and on Nagpur Highway at a cost of Rs 5000 crore. From Indira Park to VST and from Ramnagar to Baghlingampally roads would be developed at a total cost of Rs 426 crore. The project has been launched already. The works are under progress. In all, 16 link roads have been developed in Hyderabad and six more in the process of execution.

Keeping in mind the increasing population and its density in Hyderabad, the KCR government is developing the roads. In fact, KTR, the Municipal Administration Minister, has planned to develop 133 link roads in phases. The objective of the link roads would be increase connectivity to the main roads, reduce the traffic congestion on the main roads, and reduce the time of travel and save time. That is why the government embarked on development of 22 link roads at a cost of Rs 313.65 crore. KTR focussed special attention on the development of link roads, which is unprecedented in the country. As development indices indicate that the roads are crucial for development of the cities, the government embarked the SRDP (Rs 6000 crore) and CRMP (Rs 1800 crore)
