· A temporary break from demolitions
· Government decision in the wake of public fear and anxiety
The Hydra bulldozer, which had instilled fear in the real estate sector with its demolitions of illegal constructions, has now come to a halt. In the face of protests and other forms of unrest regarding the demolitions, the government has decided to grant Hydra a temporary break. The government has advised Hydra not to carry out any demolitions for the next three months and has instructed them to focus on the construction aspect during this time.
Before Hydra was established, the GHMC’s Directorate of Enforcement, along with the Vigilance and Disaster Management, had already started demolitions. Later, the government set up Hydra, issuing orders on July 19, extending its jurisdiction up to the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Since then, illegal constructions in nearly 20 locations were removed, and government lands and lakes spanning over 50 acres were protected.
However, while Hydra initially received a positive response, the situation gradually became more negative. The real estate sector was severely impacted, with property transactions declining. Meanwhile, the High Court expressed anger over Hydra’s demolitions in Ameenpur. As a result, public opposition to Hydra also grew. In light of these circumstances, the government decided to temporarily halt Hydra’s demolitions. It has been decided that Hydra’s operations will be paused for at least three months. During this period, several aspects of Hydra’s operations are expected to be reviewed and corrected.
