Unrestricted construction impact night sleep

  • Must impose restrictions to reduce noise, air and dust pollution
  • Issue needs immediate attention of municipal officials

Hyderabad does not have the geographical barriers unlike cities of Mumbai and Chennai. Hence, the city has full scope to expand in all four directions. Metro Rail, MMTS and sub-urban trains have made it possible to travel easily from one area to another. As we do not have shortage of space, experts opine that Hyderabad does not need too many skyscrapers which are normally encouraged in cities with land constraints. However, the developers in Hyderabad are constructing multi-storied buildings and skyscrapers in populated areas within the city.

Wherever there is enough space, they are building more apartments increasing the population density and causing trouble to the local people. As a result, the people living in the locality are facing dire situations, with increased burden on the local infrastructure. Due to unabated construction work, even the IT employees who are working from home, are facing serious problems. It is imperative for the government to act a bit tougher against this construction activity.

While granting permission for apartments in residential areas, local bodies should clearly mention the working hours to the developers in advance. They must be allowed to work only during the day and explain all the guidelines for the same especially not to cause any inconvenience to the people living in the vicinity.

After getting the permission from the local body, the developers dig up the cellars first. In a hurry to complete this work as soon as possible, they work day and night giving sleepless nights for the locals. If people complain to Dial 100, they are being advised to approach GHMC which was approving the construction work. They give one excuse or the other stating that they cannot stop the construction work at at night. Hence, the local bodies should ensure that the developers do not flout the norms and ask them to take up digging work only during the day.
Due to construction of new apartments in residential areas, air and noise pollution becomes a regular problem for the residents living in the surrounding areas. New procedures should be established in this regard. The municipal authorities should be realistic in the wake of problems faced by the tax payers and suggest appropriate solutions. Some guidelines should be prepared on precautions to be taken by developers to reduce noise and air pollution. Otherwise, this problem will continue to persist.
