A Hyderabad-based real estate company has defrauded an NRI by promising to sell land. The NRI, who resides in Nigeria, lost Rs 3.6 crore to this scam involving a prominent Tollywood actor as the brand ambassador for the company. The fraud came to light when the company asked him to visit the sub-registrar’s office to complete the land registration, but then failed to show up, leading him to realize he had been cheated.
The NRI had attempted to purchase land during a visit to Hyderabad in 2021 and reached out to the company after seeing their advertisements featuring the actor. Representatives of the company informed him that they had several projects in the Ranga Reddy area, prompting him to decide to buy a 2,100 square yard plot in Kokapet. He paid Rs 3.6 crore for this purpose, agreeing to have the land registered within a year.
Later, he discovered that the plots he had bought were already registered under other people’s names. When he confronted the company owner about this, he was assured that they would cancel the sale deeds in those names and register the land in his name instead. The owner promised that the registration would happen after he paid the remaining amount. Trusting this, the NRI paid the full amount and went to the sub-registrar’s office on the date specified by the owner. However, when the company owner failed to show up, he attempted to call multiple times without any response and ultimately filed a complaint with the police. As a result, a case has been registered against the company owner.
