The Municipal Corporation of Nasik in Maharashtra proposes to extend 1 per cent concession in property tax to housing societies that produce compost out of garbage processing it on their premises, according to municipal commissioner Kailas Jadhav. He said that the concession will come into force from next fiscal year. The housing societies that recycle their garbage to produce compost or biogas are entitled to get the benefit.
If buildings set up plants to prepare compost out of garbage, the civic body is saved from the trouble of collecting garbage from such buildings. The compost produced can be applied in gardens, nurseries and terrace gardens. The proposal would be put before the general body meeting of the corporation to seek approval. Currently, the civic body collects 600 tons of garbage through 262 vehicles and the garbage is sent to Pathardi plant on the outskirts of Nasik for recycling, he said the civic body wants to ease the burden on the plant. If housing societies take up the task of preparation of compost on their premises, the burden on the civic body will ease. He pointed out that the corporation is already extending 1 per cent concession in property tax to users of solar water heaters.`
