Urban population increases in four districts

    • Hyderabad, Medchal, Rangareddy among the top 3content
    • Followed by Hanmakonda, Mancherial, Peddapalli
  • Urgent need for improving urban infrastructure
  • Municipal Administration department requires better budget allocations

King Johnson Koyyada: Population in urban areas of Telangana, is increasing. The latest figures released by the Telangana State Planning department indicate that migration from rural areas to nearby urban areas is on the rise. The government should develop the infrastructure in densely populated areas on a priority basis which would prompt the developers to undertake new housing projects in the respective areas. This would also ensure an increased real estate activity which in turn would improve revenues for the State government.

Along with Hyderabad, urban population has increased significantly in Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Hanmakonda, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Sangareddy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Adilabad, Nalgonda, Khammam and Jagitial. For example, Hyderabad is a metro city with about 39,43,323 population. In the case of Medchal-Malkajgiri district, out of a total population of 24.60 lakhs, 22.50 lakhs live in urban area. The total population of Rangareddy district is 24.26 lakhs, while the population living in urban areas is still only 14 lakhs. In Hanmakonda, 53.1 per cent of the people live in urban areas.
New areas have joined the top 10 list in terms of urban population. The important districts are Mancherial, Peddapalli, Sangareddy, and Bhadradri-Kothagudem. These were followed by Warangal and Karimnagar. Mancherial has a total population of 8.07 lakh, of which 3.54 lakhs live in urban areas. The next place is Peddapalli where about 3.04 lakh people live in towns. Similarly, 5.29 lakh people in Sangareddy and 3.39 lakh people in Bhadradri Kothagudem, are residing in urban areas.
Warangal, the second largest city after Hyderabad, has a total population of 7.37 lakh, of which only 2.27 lakh live in urban areas. Karimnagar has a total population of 10 lakhs and a population
of 3.08 lakhs are residing in the towns. Khammam has 3.16 lakh urban dwellers, Jagitial 2.21 lakh, Nirmal 1.51 lakh and Rajna Sirisilla districts 1.16 lakh urban dwellers.

As the population in urban areas of the State is increasing, the Telangana government needs to spend a large amount of funds to increase the urban infrastructure. In the 2022-2023 budget, there is a need to allocate more funds for the Municipal Administration department. Infrastructure such as roads, drinking water, electricity and drainage should be developed in towns and cities. Only then, people will come forward to build own houses in the respective areas. Otherwise, all urban areas are in danger of becoming slums.

Realty sector contributing more than agriculture

India recorded a growth rate of minus 3 percent, while Telangana recorded a growth rate of 2.4 percent. In the year 2020-21, the GSDP of Telangana was Rs 9,80,407 crores. India’s GDP stood at Rs 1,97,45,670 crore. Thus, Telangana’s share in the domestic GDP has reached almost five per cent as against 4.1 per cent in 2011-12.

The GSDP of Telangana is Rs 6,44,599 crore. Upon department-wise distribution of the GSDP, the agricultural sector’s share in 2020-21 was recorded at Rs 98,809 crore (Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Fishing). But in the same financial year, the real estate sector accounted for Rs 1,18,330 crore. That means, the real estate sector registered higher contribution to the State’s GSDP than the agriculture sector. This growth was recorded as a large number of youth are increasingly indulging in the real estate transactions at village level to mandal and district level. Though this trend picked up after the State formation, it has grown beyond expectations since 2017.

IT registers 13 percent growth

The IT sector in Telangana has grown at a rate of 13 per cent in 2020-21. The value of IT exports stood at about Rs 1,45,522 crore. The previous year’s figure was Rs 1,28,807 crore. Similarly, new employees in the Telangana IT sector grew by eight percent.
