Tirupati, Vizag better for life after retirement

Hyderabad, Pune in Tier 1 cities

Majority of the netizens vote for the same

When it comes to choosing a city for living after retirement, most netizens voted for Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vizag, Kochi, and Pune. The push to plan for financial freedom after retirement, without facing any difficulties, began in the early 2000s. This concept is known as Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE).

Generally, many people prefer to live in their native places after retirement. However, there seems to be a shift in this preference. Due to the lack of medical and other amenities in their native villages, more people are showing interest in Tier-2 cities that are closer to their hometowns. In this context, a 38-year-old individual who has settled in the United States asked netizens for advice on a city suitable for living after retirement.

He mentioned, “I plan to visit India within a year. I will continue my work for the next four to five years. I prefer living in large houses, so I want to stay in a villa of 4,000 to 5,000 square feet. I have allocated a budget of Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore.”

When considering factors such as a vibrant nightlife, basic amenities, transportation facilities, connectivity for international travel, and lower heat, it appears that Chandigarh and Goa are favourable choices. Contrary to the expectation that netizens would suggest major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, the online community responded differently. They recommended places such as Tirupati and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and Kochi in Kerala. One netizen mentioned, “Tirupati has good connectivity to Bengaluru and Chennai. It’s just a 40-minute flight to Hyderabad. With a two-hour drive, you can reach three coastal destinations.

Additionally, it serves as a supply chain hub.”
Another person compared Tirupati to Denver and Jackson Hole in the U.S., noting that it serves as a haven for many retirees, boasting high tourist revenue and expensive real estate. They elaborated, “In the past three years, infrastructure in Tirupati has significantly improved. All new roads are 100 feet wide. There are plans for a master plan to connect several small villages, air cargo drop from northern India, and to transform it into a supply chain hub for the South.”

A netizen from Kochi added, “Kochi will definitely meet your needs. It has better international connectivity than any other city except the top 3. It offers good amenities and has a metro system. Though slightly humid, temperatures don’t exceed 38 degrees Celsius.”

Regarding Tier-1 cities, Hyderabad and Pune have been recommended. One netizen posted, “Hyderabad has excellent international connectivity and benefits from being a capital city. The weather is great for nine months of the year. The nightlife is vibrant due to the large number of young people, though not as much as in Mumbai or Bengaluru. The roads are good in places where you might want to settle. Moreover, those who return from the U.S. and settle here find the experience quite substantial, so you never feel like you’re in a completely new place.”

Another netizen noted, “Property prices are not as high as in Mumbai or Bengaluru. You can buy or build a nice villa in a location within 30 minutes of a tech hub.” Some others mentioned that Pune is a good city.
