The Supreme Court has directed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHDA) to submit a report within three weeks on the surplus area handed over by the builders in 246 housing development and re-development projects and wanted it to apprise the current status of the FIRs registered against the builders till August this year.
The MHDA challenged in court the FIRs registered against the economic offences wing officials accusing them of colluding with builders. Hearing the petition the SC gave the directions to the HMDA to submit it the above said report in three weeks. Out of the total number of builders, only 133 have returned the surplus area. Under the RTI, a person called Kamalakar R Shenoi gathered the information that the MHDA gave permission for re-development of 1728 projects as on March 14, 2014.
In all, 379 developers did not return 1,37,332 sq meters of the area to the MHDA. A petition was filed in this regard before the Mumbai High Court. The court identified that only 133 developers have returned 32,333 square meters. It realized that FIRs were lodged against only a few builders. It identified that the developers sold 36 lakh square meters of the area worth Rs 40,000 crore. Therefore, it ordered the officials to register cases against the colluded officials.
