In what could discomfit the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Supreme Court has put its scanner on many instances of NGT passing “mechanical and pre-drafted” orders and said it would soon take up this issue and pass corrective orders. Hearing an appeal against NGT’s May 4 ruling, imposing an allegedly arbitrary penalty of Rs 40 crore on a Ghaziabad-based builder for carrying out constructions purportedly without requisite environmental clearances, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala recently ordered a stay on the recovery of the penalty and posted the matter for hearing on August 12.
