Durability and diversified product range have become synonymous with Rajasthan’s new marble varieties that are also highly affordable. The cutting and processing of the marble stone lends beauty to the product. According to a conservative estimate at least 4000-5000 new granite units have been established in Rajasthan during the past five or six years. The Rajasthan is ahead of southern states in production of marble on account of new marble stone cutting technology adopted by the units there.
In 2015-16, the total production of marble was put at 25 lakh tons. But it multiplied to 56 lakh tons in 2019-20. Up to 5000 new units have been set up in Kishan Gadh, Jalore, Rajsamund and other places in Rajasthan as many entrepreneurs ventured into granite mining and processing business, according to the Centre for Development of Stones Vice Chairman Rakesh Kumar Gupta. He said that Rajasthan surpassed the Telugu states in production of granite stones. After bifurcation of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan emerged as the top state in production of granite stones.
Prior to bifurcation, the Andhra Pradesh topped in granite production. Now, Rajasthan replaced Telugu states. In 2015-16, the combined granite production of granite was 46 lakh tons as against 25 lakh tons by Rajasthan. By 2019-20, the total production of Telugu states rose to 65 lakh tons as against 56 lakh tons produced by Rajasthan. In 2020-21, it increased to 66 lakh tons.
No official information was available with regard to total granite production in Telugu states for 2020-21. But the mining department officials of Rajasthan have confirmed that Rajasthan granite production surpassed that of Telugu states. Besides India, Brazil and China also export granite. By virtue of its cost factor, China has grabbed a small portion of Indian granite market. Because of the qualities of the Indian granite, it enjoyed good demand in overseas market.
