The landscape of Hyderabad is set to change significantly as a major step has been taken towards the ambitious Musi River rejuvenation project initiated by the Government of Telangana.
The Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited has prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the cleaning and beautification of the Musi River. After discussions with environmental experts, diplomats from different countries, banks, NGOs, public representatives and residents living along the Musi river basin, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is expected to give final approval to the DPR.
If the river rejuvenation and beautification works are implemented as planned, the Musi River could become another landmark attraction for Hyderabad. The Telangana government is moving ahead rapidly with the Musi cleaning and beautification project. Plans have been prepared to ensure continuous flow of fresh water in the river along with clean air and a pleasant environment along its banks.
As the Musi Riverfront Development DPR is now ready, the government is preparing to move forward with implementation. A 9-kilometre stretch from Himayat Sagar to Bapu Ghat and an 11-kilometre stretch from Gandipet to Bapu Ghat together form a 20-kilometre development corridor where the streams meet. The government plans to bring water from the Godavari River and create a Triveni Sangamam at this location. The rivers and surrounding catchment areas across this 20-kilometre stretch, along with the development of Gandhi Sarovar at Bapu Ghat, will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹5,812 crore.
The project has been divided into two zones:
Zone-1: From Himayat Sagar to Gandhi Sarovar with an estimated cost of ₹1,684 crore.
Zone-2: From Gandipet to Gandhi Sarovar with an estimated cost of ₹1,992 crore.
The project will ensure a continuous flow of fresh water while the riverbanks will be developed with modern infrastructure. Around 15 bridges will be constructed from the twin reservoirs — Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar — up to Gandhi Sarovar.
The development plan includes:
A 100-feet road on one side of the river
An 80-feet road on the other side
Pedestrian pathways
Cycling tracks
Removal of silt and leveling of riverbanks
Development of parks in selected areas
The project will also include hotels, children’s parks and amphitheatres. Three to four additional small bridges will be constructed across the Musi River. Boating facilities will also be introduced at Gandhi Sarovar. At Bapu Ghat, there are about 60 acres of government land, while another 98 acres belonging to the Defence Department will be acquired. The government also plans to develop the Gandhi Sarovar tourism project on 34 acres of land belonging to the tourism department at a cost of ₹400 crore.
A multi-storey tower up to 100 metres high will be built as part of the project. The tower will include meeting suites, offices, a museum and a special exhibition on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. A 35 to 50-metre statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be installed on the tower. Behind the statue, a large observation structure similar to the London Eye on the banks of the River Thames will be developed. The structure will be designed to resemble Gandhi’s spinning wheel (charkha).
To ensure water flow in the Musi River, the government has already started work to bring five TMC of water every year from the Godavari River through the Kaleshwaram project to Hyderabad. Out of this, 2.5 TMC will be used for drinking water, while the remaining water will be released into the Musi River to maintain continuous flow.
