The Telangana government is rapidly taking steps to beautify the Musi River. In the first phase, plans are being prepared to undertake work from Bapughat upstream. It is known that water flows from Osman Sagar, 11.5 km away, and from Himayatsagar, 9.5 km away, meeting at Bapughat. A statue of Gandhi, the tallest in the world, will be erected there.
Measures are being taken to complete a total of 21 km from Osman Sagar upstream to Bapughat in the first phase. They are planning to divert Godavari water from Mallanna Sagar to Himayatsagar and from there to Osman Sagar. Water will be released into the Musi from these two reservoirs as needed. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that tenders for the diversion and purification of Godavari water will be called in the first week of November.
As part of the Musi rejuvenation and beautification project, a total of 30 km will be developed as a ring. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that employees in the IT corridor can comfortably walk to this area. There are some Army lands here, and the Telangana government has written to the central government to take these lands and provide alternative land in return. Once the boundaries of the Musi are determined, designs, drawings, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared, the Chief Minister clarified.
After the comprehensive survey of the Musi is completed and clarity is obtained on the extent of the land, they will design where and how much space should be built. A consortium of five internationally recognised consultancy firms is preparing the DPR for the Musi revitalisation, with a total budget of Rs 141 crores allocated for this purpose.
The government believes that the night markets to be established as part of the Musi beautification will transform into economic centres. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy estimates that upon completion of this project, it will create another city. The consortium will recommend whether to proceed with a government-private partnership or a hybrid annuity model. Telangana government anticipates that finalising the concept and starting work will take 18 months. However, since work is ongoing continuously, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy mentioned that a comprehensive DPR will be ready in three months.
