The Telangana government is moving forward with a well-planned approach to beautify the city of Hyderabad. After deciding to clean and beautify the Musi River, the Revanth-led government is now preparing proposals for the construction of a metro rail along the length of the Musi River. The government believes that constructing metro rail along with roads and elevated corridors on both sides of the Musi will transform the shape and structure of Hyderabad.
In the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Musi River development, officials have decided to remove illegal constructions from Narsingi to Nagole along the river. Revenue and irrigation officials have identified illegal constructions along the Musi River in the districts of Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Medchal-Malkajgiri. Marking has been done for such houses, and double-bedroom houses have been allotted to the residents. As a result, a few families have shifted to these double-bedroom houses. Some residents from other areas have raised concerns that their livelihood may be affected. In response, funds have been allocated to assist them. The government has decided to help around 15,000 families living in the Musi river catchment area, with each family to receive Rs 25,000. A total of Rs 37 crores will be transferred to the collectors of the three districts.
The development of the Musi River will be carried out in phases. In the first phase, development work will begin in areas like Langer House and Bapu Ghat. The availability of vacant space and large areas in these regions will facilitate rapid beautification work. With Rs 1500 crores previously allocated for this purpose, the Musi Development Corporation officials are focusing on development in all areas along the river, with the goal of improving every available area.
The Telangana government is planning to clean and beautify the Musi River. As part of this, plans have been made to divert water from the Godavari River into the Musi. The government is considering the construction of a road and metro rail route along the Musi river corridor. Metro officials have initially estimated that the cost of constructing a metro rail along the river will be around Rs 9,000 crores. It is expected that up to 25 kilometres of the 55-kilometre route could be on the ground. Clarity on the feasibility of this project will come only after further studies. The proposal is to develop the Musi riverfront from Narsingi, starting from the ORR, passing through Bapu Ghat, the High Court, Chaderghat, and Nagole, extending to the eastern parts of Hyderabad along the ORR.
To travel from one side of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to the other, one would need to travel almost 80 kilometres. However, if a road is constructed through the city, the travel distance could be reduced. As a result, the government is proposing the construction of a new metro rail route. After Nagole, it is possible to continue the metro on the ground for some distance, a suggestion put forward by the HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority). The government has also suggested that the metro could be elevated in certain areas. They are studying possible routes that could help reduce construction costs. A thorough plan is being developed for the construction of parks, hotels, multiplexes, and shopping malls in the Musi river area.
