Massive Plantation on Vacant Lands in Telangana Districts

The government has decided to take up massive plantations on the vacant lands of irrigation department in coordination with the department. This follows the successful implementation of the Haritha Haram programme throughout the state which has not only helped in rejuvenating degraded forests but also helped in increasing the green cover by 7% as per the latest available surveys.

The Irrigation Dept. has furnished the district wise total area/ length of canals available for plantations on the irrigation lands during the year 2022-23. Action plan has been received from the Dist. Collectors for an area of 5408.53 Kms under Linear plantation and an area of 1782 acres under Block plantations during the year 2022-23.

For Linear Plantations

An extent of 9475.68 Kms was identified in which plantation was taken up in 2767.31 Kms in which 13,42,173 plants were planted.

For Block Plantations

An extent of 3875.26 Acres was identified in which plantation was taken up in 590.04 acres in which 6,01, 385 plants were planted.
Seven state level teams were constituted and deputed to Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jagityal, Peddapalli, Wanaparthy, Jogulamba Gadwal, Nagarkurnool, Narayanpet, Siddipet, Suryapet and Adilabad district to inspect these plantations. Senior Quality Control Officer (SQCO) , Junior Quality Control Officer (JQCO) under Quality Control cell and Plantation Manager have inspected the plantations in the districts of Rajanna Sirisilla, Nirmal, Mancherial, Nizamabad, Mahabubabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Mulugu, Sanagareddy, Medak, Y. Bhuvanagiri and Mahabubnagar districts.

Species like Kanuga, Eetha, Gulmohar, Seema Tangedu, Rain Tree, Seethaphal, Dirishanam, Peltophorum were planted in these districts. Officials who had inspected the plantations at the field level felt that orientation to all the field staff is necessary. They also observed that plants tie up arrangements, utilization of tall plants, estimate preparation and spacing between plants should be followed. Native species like Neem, Tamarind, Jamun, Babul, Neeru Maddi, Maredu, Casurina, Bamboo etc. were proposed for plantation. The need for causality replacement wherever necessary was also suggested by the officials. They highlighted that fencing should be taken to avoid cattle grazing. The need to utilize all the tasks like fertilizer application, weeding, watering etc. for ensuring good survival of the plantations was the need of the hour.
