Is Rs 1.25 crore enough to buy a house in India?

An NRI’s inquiry on social media.

Suggestions from netizens for settling in Pune, Kolkata, Vadodara, Lucknow, and Goa.

“Is Rs 1.25 Crore Enough to Buy a House in India? In Which City Can You Find a House for Less? Will This Amount Be Enough to Settle in the Hindi Belt? Will There Be Any Money Left After Buying a Property?”

These are some of the questions posed by an NRI on the social media platform Reddit. An NRI, who lived in Delhi and Bengaluru and has now moved to Britain, is contemplating returning to India. The 29-year-old IT professional is concerned about losing his job in London and is seeking suggestions from netizens on where to settle in India. He mentioned that he is open to the Hindi Belt (Noida, Lucknow, Patna, Jamshedpur, Raipur, etc.) and does not mind cities like Bengaluru, Gurgaon, Delhi, or Mumbai, which are quite expensive.

Many netizens responded with suggestions to settle in Pune, Kolkata, Vadodara, Lucknow, and Goa. A Redditor recommended Pune, noting that rents there are low and there are many IT companies, making it easier to find affordable help for household chores. Another Redditor suggested renting a 1 BHK in Rishikesh, then going to Goa in December for two months and renting an apartment to chill, and visiting Leh during the monsoon to explore Ladakh on a rented bike.

It was noted that in Vadodara, a 2 BHK could be found for Rs 25-30 lakhs or rented for Rs 10-15 thousand. In Kolkata, flats are relatively cheap and food costs are low. A Mumbai resident pointed out that Mumbai is very expensive, and with a budget of Rs 1 crore, one could only get a 400 square feet flat. In contrast, another netizen mentioned that in Bangalore, one could buy property ranging from 600 to 1200 square feet with the same budget. In Delhi, Rs 1 crore would be sufficient for a 1000 square feet flat, while in Noida, it could buy a 1350 square feet flat. In Kolkata, one could get a 2000 square feet 4 BHK flat.
