Under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban, the first Green Waste Processing Plant in India has been set up in Indore through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This plant is a significant step toward environmental sustainability and aims to revolutionize waste management in the city by converting green waste into valuable resources. The primary objective is to bring about transformative changes in waste management systems by processing green waste, which includes garden waste, tree branches, leaves, etc.
This plant not only processes green waste but also generates income. By supplying wood and other materials, the Indore Municipal Corporation is earning nearly ₹3,000 per ton as royalty. Located on a 55,000 square feet area in Bicholi Hapsi, the plant recycles wood and tree branches to produce wood pellets, which can serve as an alternative to coal.
Large branches from the city’s trees are directed to the Green Waste Processing Plant, where they are recycled. Additionally, green waste generated in areas with large companies in Indore is also collected and sent to the plant, where it is recycled for a nominal fee. On average, the city generates around 30 tons of green waste daily, with this number rising to 60 to 70 tons during the autumn season.
The plant also turns sawdust into eco-friendly fuel, providing an alternative to traditional combustion methods. Furthermore, it can be used to produce durable packing materials that reduce plastic consumption. Furniture manufacturers consider this as a useful raw material for mixed products. This initiative not only addresses waste management issues but also contributes to sustainable development by recycling waste into useful products.
