New Delhi: The latest 2025 Safety Index Report released by global research platform Numbeo Safety Index has placed India’s coastal city Mangalore at the top among the country’s safest cities. Despite being a growing hub for IT and real estate, Hyderabad has failed to make it to the Top 10 list.
The report evaluates cities based on public safety, crime intensity, rate of attacks on women, thefts, and drug usage. With a safety score of 74.2, Mangalore has emerged as India’s safest city, ranking 49th globally. Gujarat’s Vadodara secured the second spot, followed by Ahmedabad (3rd) and Surat (4th).
Other Indian cities in the Top 10 include: Jaipur (5th), Navi Mumbai (6th), Thiruvananthapuram (7th), Chennai (8th), Pune (9th), Chandigarh (10th).
Interestingly, the national capital Delhi has been ranked at the bottom, highlighting its persistent safety concerns. Meanwhile, Hyderabad, which has long projected itself as a global investment and IT destination, recorded a safety score of 57.3, but still could not secure a place among the top 10 safest cities. Even Visakhapatnam, with a slightly better score of 63.03, failed to feature in the global safe cities list.
On the global stage, Middle Eastern cities dominated the rankings, with Abu Dhabi (UAE) leading as the safest city worldwide for the ninth consecutive year, with a safety index score of 88.8. Other cities in the Top 10 include Doha, Dubai, Sharjah, Taipei, Manama, Muscat, The Hague, Trondheim, and Eindhoven. The report underscores how Abu Dhabi and other Middle Eastern cities have consistently maintained their global reputation for safety, while many Indian metros continue to grapple with urban safety challenges.
