A Delhi court has refused to suspend the seven-year jail term, awarded by the Patiala House Court to real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal in Uphaar theater fire accident that led to the death of 59 in 1997. The court refused to honor their petition to grant bail by suspending the jail term.
On July 13, while the film Border was being screened at Uphaar in Green Park area of Delhi, fire broke out. The incident claimed 59 lives and the resultant stampede left 100 injured. Then a case was registered against the duo. After trying the case for about 25 years, the SC sentenced them to undergo a two –year jail term. However, the SC offered to do away with the sentence if each of them pay Rs 30 crore to build a hospital in Delhi. They paid the amount and got themselves released from jail. But, the Patiala House Court sentenced them to undergo jail for seven years on charges of tampering with evidence.
