The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is in the process of preparing a comprehensive sewage master plan. By 2051, it is estimated that the population will be approximately 25.6 million, producing around 3716 MLD of sewage. Currently, within the GHMC limits, 1650 MLD of sewage is produced, with 772 MLD being treated through 25 STPs. To bridge this gap, the Water Supply and Sewerage Board has initiated the construction of an additional 31 STPs with a capacity of 1259.50 MLD, at a cost of ₹3866 crores.
To cover Uppal, Kapra, Malkajgiri, and Alwal, north of the Musi catchment area, 8 STPs are being constructed at a cost of ₹1230.21 crores. Two STPs are completed, three are under construction, and three more are proposed under AMRUT-2.0.
To cover Rajendranagar and LB Nagar circles, south of the Musi catchment area, 6 STPs are being undertaken. Two STPs are completed, and three more are in progress.
Under the Hussain Sagar Lake catchment area, 14 STPs are being constructed to cover Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, and Serilingampally circles. One STP has started, nine are in progress, and four more are proposed under AMRUT-2.0.
Overall, the total capacity of the STPs along the Musi River bank is noted to be 1338 MLD. By July 2024, when the new STPs become operational, Hyderabad city will achieve 100% sewage treatment capacity. Additionally, as part of the comprehensive sewage master plan, 27 STPs with a capacity of 1259.50 MLD will be required.
For the GHMC area, proposals amounting to ₹3723 crores for improving the sewage network in core city and peripheral circles have been submitted to the government. Furthermore, in the ORR area, proposals are under review for the construction of 38 STPs with a capacity of 965 MLD at a cost of ₹3784.99 crores and one STP with a capacity of 7 MLD at a cost of ₹64.11 crores.
